An Open Letter To Samantha Brick, Who Just Won't Shut The Hell Up

If you haven't heard of Samantha Brick by now you must be living under one. She's the woman who wrote an article in the UK's Daily Mail claiming that women don't like her because she's so good looking. You can read it here, but you may want to throw things.

Now, I'm not going to enter the debate about whether Ms Brick is even good looking or not. I'm sure some people find her attractive. And up until today I had no intention of writing about her at all, even though her article made me absolutely crazy.
Yup.

Why? Three things. Firstly, her assumption that we females are threatened by beautiful women is just WRONG. I have never rejected a woman because she is more attractive than me. I have never been rejected because I am more attractive than someone else. Most of us women are concerned with what's inside.

Secondly, Ms Brick's claim that she is disliked because of her looks has no grounding in empirical evidence. Not once has she considered that maybe it's her, and not her appearance. Far easier to blame society in general than to look within yourself.

Thirdly, studies time and time again have shown that more attractive people do better in life, earn more, and get more promotions. It's been proven. It's FACT.

But all of that, I could let go. Today, however, Samantha Brick took things too far. Today, on Channel 7's Sunrise program, she talked about 'prejudice'. The real reason she wrote the article, she said, was to highlight the prejudice that exists towards beautiful women.

"Racism isn't acceptable," she said (or something like that, I was screaming at the TV at the time), "sexism isn't acceptable, so why is this acceptable?"

And with that, I completely lost the plot.

PREJUDICE? What the FUCK does Samantha Brick know about prejudice? How DARE she talk about prejudice.

Who experiences prejudice in our society? Let me make a list.

Blacks.
Gays.
The obese.
The elderly.
Disabled people.
Teenage mothers.
People with physical deformities.
People with mental illness.
Muslims.
The poor.
....and the list goes on.

But attractive, blonde, forty-something, affluent white women?

No. I DON'T THINK SO.

So Samantha Brick, please shut up now. You are insulting all of us with your privileged whining and I, for one, have had enough.

  1. Ugh. So with you Kerry. She's an attractive enough lady with a huge amount of self-confidence. Good for her. But immediately I sensed an ugliness to her inner beauty. In life we get what we give. My guess is she places an over importance of the looks in others. Judging them accordingly. To be so self absorbed to put your own 'attractiveness' in a hardship category - in a society that rewards youth & good looks - is an obvious lack of self-development. Hopefully this might serve as an opportunity for Ms Brick to grow her inner beauty & love for all.

  2. Mr A thinks it's a publicity stunt of some sort. I'm not sure.

In any case, you've nailed it here. Let's face it, she's not losing friends because of her self-confessed beauty, but BECAUSE she thinks the sun shines out of her arse. No one likes people who think so highly of themselves.

There's this mother at my school who is absolutely gorgeous. Middle Son once pointed to a video clip of Delta Goodrem and likened her to the singer. But not only is she gorgeous on the outside, but she is the most beautiful person on the inside. And she has a LOT of girlfriends.

Only women who give off that air of 'I'm so much more gorgeous than you and all your husbands want me' will lose friends. It's who they are inside that's the deal breaker.

  4. i agree i think its her attitude that makes people not like her, maby if she spent time thinking of others rather than herself she wont have the problem.

  5. I stopped reading her after day 2. My head was hurting from banging it repeatedly against the wall.

  6. HALLELUJAH! Thank you Kerry for stating what we were all thinking. xo

  7. Kerri I hope my son never hears her or conversations about her, and gets totally baffled about a world he's just starting to make sense of.  I hope his father (who has him away on hols this week) has not had Sunrise on in the mornings. But I am sure he will come across NARCISSISM soon than later in his life. I hope he's ready.
As for the word prejudice. I guess she can use it. Most narcissists learn it at an early age. ;-)  It's a free world. Doesn't mean she understands its real meaning...
I think that she has not EARNED any right to use it properly. Thus, your reaction...

  8. I can only assume, and I may be giving her too much credit here, that Ms Brick has realised she's made an arse of herself and has now decided, 'what the hell, in for a penny in for a pound, might as well milk this for all its worth'. While I personally don't subscribe to the 'all publicity is good publicity' it seems Ms Brick does. So let's just pop her in the freezer for a bit til she cools down. I think a Brick media ban could only benefit us all.

  9. Ms Brick should come and spend a day working with me and see real life prejudices against teen mums, single mums, children with disabilities, children living through tauma, medical diagnosed children, families who have nothing through life crisis and then she can talk about prejudice. I have not been drawn to leave a comment before as I feel so angry but only because I respect what you say Kerri that I'm here.

  10. Kerri, I totally agree...she's a douche, but if it turns out she's releasing a book next month, I'll really go ballistic! What a PR campaign!

  11. I think this lady should have a look at Edens posts from Africa and then she can see if she is really hard done by.

shes a ridiculously narrowminded stupid woman! thnx again for voicing what we are thinking! but will it get through her "beautiful"1. skull?! doubtful!!

footnote 1. beautiful defined by her father of course as how all good loving fathers should descibe their children!

  13. You are so right. She is boring and narcissistic and has NOOOOO idea about prejudice. Can she please shut (the eff) up now!

  14. Well said. That is all. :-)

  15. Ah... so THIS is what the twitter retweets about 'don't hate me because I am beautiful' are referring to.  Seriously? How is she even getting published?

Has anyone told Ms Brick (or as I will henceforth refer to her "Thick As A") beauty is more than good makeup and straight teeth.  It's about the WHOLE PACKAGE. What a tosser.

  16. Oh, you nailed it. I had to switch her off this morning. NOT because of her apparent beauty...she drove me nuts with her shallow claims. Definitely another agenda bubbling away below the surface.

  17. She seriously thinks she faces prejudice because she is soooo good looking? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. There are thousands, no probably millions of people that face prejudice every day. Sometimes this prejudice even threatens their very lives and this jumped up so and so reckons she' s hard done by? Gosh that makes me mad. I'm not surprised you have given in and blogged your outrage. I am tempted to myself. Well said Kerri!

  18. I haven't read the article but living here in the UK, I've seen loads of hilarious stuff about her on the tv and online.  She is a figure of fun.  The Daily Mail have totally hung her out to dry by using  her insanity.  We should probably just feel sorry for her, she's clearly delusional.   If people weren't nasty to her before they certainly are now.  The Daily Mail is a vile paper.

  19. Dear lord what a load of bollocks she is. Well said lovey

  20. all I noticed was the fact that she stumbled through the entire interview and then claimed that she worked in television.

Methinks not lady.  Maybe it was because you were too beautiful...

  21. Maybe they all hate her?

  22. Ugh. Am WAY outta the loop, have never heard of her, but now I do and I HIGHLY concur with everything you wrote here.

    For fucks sake. SERIOUSLY.

  23. Oh well said, Kerri!! This woman needs to realise that we're hoping like fuck her 15 minutes of fame are OVER.

Love a good rant that MAKES COMPLETE SENSE.

  26. Kerri well said i have to admit i must be under that brick,,lol.but then as i`m sure you`ll understand unless an article is about Simon Baker..i have no interest in it..well not quite but pretty close..

  27. Here's the thing, she may think she is attractive, but her attitude is so completely un-attractive. Who in their right mind actually vocalises that they think they are attractive and that people treat them differently because of it. Surely they get treated differently because of their attitude not appearance?

What also annoyed me, is that I saw 2 seperate interviews with her, not only did she come across as a stuck up, self rightous person, but she completely contradicted herself in these interviews!

Just stop lady. They world has had enough.

  28. It's this type of behavior that makes me realize so intensely that beauty does not make a person nice, or good, or anything really. And heck, I don't even think she's pretty. But a lot of people do apparently, but even more hate her because she has a bit of a personality issue. You can be 'blonde' and 'skinny' and have those straight shiny teeth (and I don't even find any of those appealing more so than others) and you can have the ugliest personality that it completely disguises you. I mean, imagine when she's an old lady. The quote about beauty is what you look like at 60; well, she's going to be one unhappy chap, and I wait happily for that day.

I agree that the debate re Samantha Brick should not be about how she looks, but the person she is within. Her self promotion is very unattractive to say the least. Countless books have been written, from transcripts in the bible, to psychologists views on conducting relationships including Dale Cernegie's international best seller, 'How to win friends & influence people'..modesty, listening & focusing on others - the key to successful r'ships...she should pick up a copy!! Might explain her difficulty with relationships....

  33. Kerry, Kerry, Kerry.. It's no secret I love reading your pieces. But really..? One on THIS!?

If there's one thing  you should know, it's any publicity is good publicity - at least to people like her!

Good on you for contributing to people keeping her 'alive'.  Urgh.

  34. Isn't there some Zoolander quote / t-shirt that would be perfect for Ms Brick (about being hated for being too 'seriously good-looking!'?)

  35. 4/16/2012 Update - SHE'S BACK!!!! Yes Samantha Brick is at it again and now we learn the reason behind this insanity. MR. BRICK her dad. He thinks just like her.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I tried to resist writing about it as well... But I couldn't. So I did.

When it comes to whether or not someone likes you, it's not about how you look it's about how you treat them.

Also - if you're prettier than me. I know that already, you don't need to tell me. Like being powerful or ladylike - if you have to tell me you are, you probably aren't...

  37. Could someone bang Brick's head between two bricks, and put her out of her misery ?.......

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh lord, wait till Ms Brick is in her 50's and she is suddenly invisible. In bars, in shops, on the beach.... everyone looks through you.... thats prejudice. you wait...

    ReplyDelete
  39. This is the first time i have heard about this , by the sounds of it I may just want to stay under my brick!
I do think there are some stereo types about about said group but prejudice in the context she claims is laughble. The only way this silly woman is being hurt is via her own mouth.  Maybe she actually does have a mental illness, BPD?  So I might just take a fence sit and not pay too much attention...

  40. I just now read her article, and this was the first article I could find that I was able to still post something.   I find her presumption that everyone who looks at her the wrong way is jealous of her looks laughable.   I also agree that she needs to look at what's inside to figure out why other women hate her so much.   Pride is a very obvious trait and is a major turnoff.  Personally, I  have had my share of compliments about my looks.   Has it gone to my head at times?   Yes, rarely.  However, I look in the mirror every day and see flaws, and no way would I be writing an article about how the world persecutes me because I'm beautiful.   Plus, I've lived long enough now to realize that people react  most to your demeanor and how you act quicker than your looks.   Yes, there may be a few very unhappy people out there who hate anyone who is attractive or successful, no matter how sweet they are, but by and large, most people can be won over by a kind, humble attitude.
